Artist Statement

I tried chemistry. It was not for me. Throughout my life and diverse education, I have been able to discover myself through mindful expression and foster my urge to create.

I am an artist. That will not change.

Biography

Charlotte Simons was born in Reisterstown, Maryland in 1997. She grew up in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Her college years were spent in the Pacific Northwest. In 2017, she lived in London, UK for a few months to study at UCL Slade School of Fine Art. Simons graduated from Whitman College in 2019 with a BA in Environmental Studies and Art. She returned to her birthplace of the Baltimore area throughout 2020-2023 for her MFA in Studio Art at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). Her work has been shown both around the United States and the United Kingdom. Since childhood, she sought out mindfulness in her experience with synesthesia, a processing phenomenon that highly influences her creative output and relationship to color. Contemporary practices focusing on mark making and gestural expression have a large place in her studio work. Outside of the art world, yet influential to her practice, she finds passion with the natural world, animals, and is very active in the competitive equestrian community. The outdoors are another passion of hers and she spends time rock climbing, ice climbing, camping, backpacking, and hiking. Her adventure buddy is McKinley, a Siberian cat, who can be found on Instagram @mckinleythecat. He also loves spending time in the studio being a helper. Simons aims to constantly learn, listen, observe, and create.
